After New Travel Warning, Questions About Safety in Mexico

Image
On Aug. 22, the U.S. Department of State issued an updated travel warning on Mexico, advising caution in several popular beach destinations, including Cancún, the Riviera Maya and Los Cabos, for the first time. The warning notes that murder, kidnapping, carjacking and robbery have been on the rise as rival gangs battle over territory. Recent shootings in Los Cabos, Cancún and Playa del Carmen indicate those conflicts have surfaced in popular beach destinations, although the statement notes that tourists have not been targets. “Resort areas and tourist destinations in Mexico generally do not see the level of drug-related violence and crime that are reported in the border region or in areas along major trafficking routes,” the warning stated. Tourism groups in Mexico are quick to point out the rarity of violent events relative to the 28 million American tourists who travel to the country each year. “If you see this in the context of how many people come, the chance of any situation happe...

U.S State Department updates travel advisories for Mexico and Cuba

Image
On Wednesday January 10, the US State Department unveiled four tiered categories to warn travelers of potential dangers overseas, using common-sense language ranging from “Exercise normal precaution” to “Do not travel.” The new rankings replace the vague and often confusing system of issuing “travel alerts” for short-term dangers posed by events like health epidemics or mass protests, and “travel warnings” for long-standing concerns like armed conflict or political instability. The new rankings are applied to every country in the world, and even Antarctica. Michelle Bernier-Toth, head of Overseas Citizens Services, said the changes were made because so few people understood the distinctions in the previous, broad rankings. “I personally was tired of explaining the difference between a travel warning and a travel alert, even to some of my colleagues,” she said. “We needed to make it more accessible to people, to make sure the information was more easily understood using plain language.”...

Cancun, Q.R. — Foreign real estate purchases throughout Mexico are the result of a strong dollar, reports the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ministry says it is the main reason behind foreigners acquiring properties throughout Mexico since 2016. They show an annual average of 663 real estate transactions in the country to foreign buyers, and say that already this year, 290 Mexican properties have been bought by foreigners. These purchases are occurring mostly in historic colonial cities such as San Miguel de Allende, but also along beach resort areas including Los Cabos and Cancun. According to a report by Point2Homes, from 2017 to 2018, the most Googled real estate locations were Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, Cabo San Lucas and Cancun, as well as the inland city of San Miguel de Allende. Sunbathing on the beach in Tulum, Mexico, time drifts by becoming one extended happy hour. With a lush jungle on one side of the main street and the Caribbean Sea on the other, hotels are usually sold out well in advance and tourism to the area is as popular as ever. I have been visiting Tulum for years and consider it my favorite home away from home. It is easy to build lifelong friendships here with the hotel and restaurant owners as well as the local people who make your return something special each time. And now a group of hoteliers has banded together to create a new movement in Tulum. With the recent launch of  Art with Me*GNP , (think Burning Man meets Art Basel), locals are building awareness on the environmental needs of the area and how to make this magical bohemian destination sustainabl...
